What
is Fair Trade Certified Coffee?
The
Fair Trade Certified label guarantees a fair price.
The
Fair Trade Certified label guarantees that farmers and workers
receive a fair price for their product. 70% of all coffee is grown
by small family farmers and it costs them 75 cents per pound to
grow their coffee. Without Fair Trade, they are paid 25 cents
per pound. With Fair Trade, independent farmers export the coffee
themselves and are guaranteed $1.26 per pound. So, more money
ends up in the hands of the people who do the work. Farmers can
feed their families and their children can go to school instead
of working in the fields.
Most
Fair Trade Certified coffee, tea and chocolate in the US is certified
organic and shade grown. This means that the products you buy
maintain biodiversity, provide shelter for migratory birds and
help reduce global warming.
